Back to the Yard for Fall Entertaining

As the summer season winds down and kids go back to school or off to college, some people’s thoughts might naturally turn to spending more time indoors. Certainly some yard work still needs doing – there may soon be leaves to rake, or for gardeners, an autumn harvest to bring in. But the outdoors in fall doesn’t have to be all work and no play. While even in milder climates, the days for lounging around in pool chairs wearing swimsuits may be numbered, the fall season sets the stage for other kinds of backyard enjoyment. It’s not time to put your outdoor furniture in storage yet!

For many, fall means football. Whether you follow your area’s professional team or your college alma mater, a game-day party in the yard can accommodate more guests than an indoor gathering. Moving the television outside and seating your fellow fans in patio furniture allows everyone to enjoy the cool, crisp air and have more of an “at-the-stadium” experience. A buffet of party snacks can be arranged on your outdoor patio table, or take off the barbecue grill cover, fire up the coals and cook up real tailgating fare like hot dogs, bratwurst and hamburgers. It’s true that everything tastes better when it’s eaten outdoors! For baseball fans, fall means playoffs and World Series time. Add a patio heater or an elegant outdoor propane firepit for those cooler night games, and cheer your favorite baseball team to victory with your friends.

Even if you don’t care so much about sports, a mild autumn day or evening is still the perfect time for a backyard social gathering, and another occasion to get more use from your outdoor furnishings and patio accessories.  Again, there’s still time to use the grill or smoker to cook up some delicious steak, ribs or pork chops, perhaps served with corn-on-the-cob or other vegetables of the season. A Labor Day weekend barbecue makes a nice ending to the summer season. Or, a few weeks later, consider having an Oktoberfest party (keep in mind the original Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany actually begins in late September). Guests can enjoy the festival’s traditional beverage while seated at outdoor bar tables and stools in the bracing air of autumn.
